There is definitely an increasing amount of female fronted gothic metal bands on the scene at the moment with a number of artists following in the footsteps of Lacuna Coil and Nightwish.

Lunatica do follow this path but have created their own sound by mixing in some interesting classical elements combined with some more modern keyboard overtones. Andrea Dätwyler has a very beautiful voice, which is more in the vein of Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) rather then being overly operatic.

New Shores varies from being relatively heavy melodic Metal as displayed in The Chosen Ones, which has a great chugging riff throughout, interspersed with some very fancy guitar work. Other tracks however get a tad wishy-washy and a bit cheesy which seems a bit too much in contrast with the heavier tracks.

So on the whole it is an album of musical contrast, but for those who like it heavy and don’t mind some softer ballads it should push the right buttons. It definitely makes for interesting listening as it isn’t predictable at all and there is no reason why they shouldn’t get as much notice as their peers.
