Black Flame // Review

CD: Imperivm Released: 23 June 2008 |
Italy’s Black Flame have been around for very nearly a decade now and Imperivm is the band’s fifth full-length release. The band play a relatively straight forward brand of black metal with slight death metal overtones that can be quite similar to Enthroned at times.
Things actually get off to somewhat of an inauspicious start for Imperium though with the oddly effected intro piece Requiem which I’m sure is meant to be foreboding and, perhaps, reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange’s soundtrack in sound but is actually just overlong and a tad boring. Things really pick up though when the blast-beat heavy title track roars out of the speakers immediately grabbing your attention before slowing down for a mid-section worthy of Thorns’ self-titled album.
As thoroughly enjoyable a listen as Imperivm is though, particularly the brutal Black Sun Theory and the previously mentioned title-track, the band never fully throw off their influences and develop their own unique identity and sound. When all is said and done though, Imperivm is an enjoyable, great sounding black metal album and while it’s somewhat generic in places it’s a good, solid album with occasional hints of greatness and is certainly well worth a listen.
