Here’s one album that’s easy to pin down. Cauldron play simple, no frills, straight down the line heavy metal the way it used to be in 1985. So retro are they, that the likes of 3 Inches of Blood sound like forward-thinking progressive rockers in comparison.
The Toronto-trio are so spot on in their execution of NWOBHM-inspired traditional metal that you would be easily forgiven for thinking Burning Fortune was actually released by a label like Neat or Mausoleum two and a half decades ago - Rapid City being a prime example of the band speeding away like the devotees of Raven and Tysondog that they so clearly are.
Tracks like Miss You to Death and Queen of Fire feature great hooks that echo the Euro-metal of yesteryear and showcase a band completely and utterly free of pretension.
No ballads. No triggers. No samples. No keyboards and absolutely no friggin’ auto-tuning. If you like your modern metal to be highly polished and expertly produced, you are quite likely to struggle with Cauldron, as they clearly loathe all that stuff.
If however, you love balls to the wall heavy metal conceived in the eighties and spat kicking and screaming into 2010, this is one for you.
