The first four Danzig albums were a big part of my getting in to heavy metal but, like I suspect many other people did, I lost touch with them after the rather ill-advised attempts to add industrial elements to the band’s trademark classic bluesy hard rock / heavy metal on the quite dreadful blackacidevil album. So, while there seems to be no information about who is actually in the band these days, aside from the “Evil Elvis” himself of course, it gives me great pleasure to inform everyone that the guitars are definitely back and pushed right up front where they should be.
As well as the guitars being cranked back up Glenn’s distinctive voice is as powerful and strong as ever and is right up front there along with the guitars, providing memorable vocal lines to several songs - most notably to riff-heavy album opener Hammer of the Gods and standout track On a Wicked Night.
As enjoyable as this album undoubtedly is, there is a couple of fillers here, Ju Ju Bone in particular seems to drag on forever despite actually being less than five minutes long, and it never quite reaches the heights of the band’s first four albums (though in truth not many do). Let’s not be too harsh though, there is several excellent songs here and despite those filler tracks Deth Red Saboah is a consistently enjoyable, very solid classic metal album with two or three real standout tracks and it’s reignited my interest in Danzig, to the point where I might even go and check out some of the other post blackacidevil albums to see if I’ve missed anything.
