Album number six for German black metallers Endstille sees the four piece build on the successes of 2007's Endstille's Reich with no real hint of progress or stylistic development. And that is meant as a good thing.
Endstille play black metal the old school way. There is no trace of keyboards, female vocals or so-called 'gothic' atmosphere to be found anywhere on these nine tracks. Endstille are purely about the spikes, the corpsepaint and the blast. Energetic, uncompromising and unapologetic in it's approach, Verführer is an album without pretence.
As is the case with many black metal bands, Endstille sound at their best when they take their foot off the accelerator a little. Tracks like Depressive / Abstract / Banished / Despised and the Celtic Frost-flavoured Hate Me....God? benefit hugely from the reduction in pace. Sure, Endstille can utilise the blast beat with the best of them, but easing off the speed gives the songs a lot more breathing space, showing off the harsh riffing and savage vocals to best effect. The end result is brutal in the extreme.
Although on the same page musically as their Scandinavian brethren, Endstille perhaps do not have the icy precision of an Immortal and nor will they ever influence the black metal scene in the way that Emperor and Darkthrone have done. What they will do however, is offer a full-blooded and brutal assault on the ears of any black-hearted metalhead anywhere. More of the same it might be, but in this case, that isn't a bad thing at all.
