CD: Dominion VIII Released: 19 May 2008 |
Swedish Death metal trio Grave are back with their new album Dominion VIII, which funnily enough is their eighth album.
Opening with a flurry of feedback things descend into the depths of A World in Darkness with a metal onslaught extraordinaire. It’s quite easy to see why Grave have lasted for so long, they play the no nonsense, old school death metal everyone wants to hear - a mix of straight up heaviness and also some less intense, sludge metal riffs, topped off with some exemplary solos.
A cross between Entombed, Obituary, Celtic Frost and Kreator is possibly the best way to describe Grave, for those of you who’ve never heard of them. However they also retain a sense of originality which a lot of current death metal outfits lack, showcased in the lightening fast Fallen (Angel Son), which is a flashback to the original thrash metal movement.
Tracks like Deathstorm and Stained by Hate quite clearly show why Grave are supporting Nile in Europe this year, as they can move from one area of the genre to the next very easily but without compromising their sound.
Annihilated God and Dark Signs give the album a more hate filled edge which sets something off in your eardrums. It is clear by the end of this album that Grave, though quite obscure, are experienced veterans at the death metal game, so young guns please take note. They may not be noted as a classic band but this is by far better than what those so called classic bands are releasing today!
