Date: 10 December 2010 Location: Guildhall, Southampton, UK With: Dear Superstar |
Every so often you’ll watch a support band massively trump the headliners, tonight is one of those nights and Jettblack is that band. The 80s style rockers are back in Southampton again after their recent tour with Reckless Love and it’s clearly not a minute too soon judging by a crowd of Jettblack t-shirts on fans singing along to every song. The set list doesn’t really stray from the last time they were here but with only one (awesome) album under their belt there’s really nothing to complain about. They even finish off with their, increasingly popular, Highway To The Dangerzone cover, probably thanks to plenty of “TOP GUN!” chants. These guys have had an impressive live stint in 2010, including slots at Ozzfest and Download Festival, so 2011 will surely hold even bigger and better things.
Now Dear Superstar are also a decent band, but tonight they just couldn’t hold the crowd like Jettblack did and just couldn’t compete with the rock show they put on. The Manchester band are a blend of sleaze rock and metalcore, having previously supported Buckcherry and bagged a spot at Sonisphere Festival, but something about them doesn’t make the cut. It could be the singer's swagger and arrogance or maybe the emptying atmosphere, despite this they ran through a set of songs that were worth the ticket. From hit Live, Love, Lie to Diseased and Distraught and including a beefy new single off album Damn Religion. Plenty of anarchy seeps from their music much like Lostprophets and similar pop-rocky bands. Worth a watch but don’t hold out much hope!
