Progressive metal to progressive fans is, of course, melodic genius. It’s clever, intricate and superior to all other metal genres that do not hold that same sense of intelligence and power.

To all other metal fans, progressive metal is art-wank that is obnoxious, overplayed and downright annoying.

It’s always nice then, when a prog band that have been around for several releases can create an album that is intelligent without the arrogance, demanding without the headaches, and a rounded, versatile piece of music that would appeal to the metal masses.

Zero Hour’s latest release Dark Deceiver is all of this and more. It’s creative, it’s engaging, and it’s effective; with punchy melodies, aggressive riffs and superb vocals. Chris Salinas is fantastic with a perfect combination of fragility and decadence that connect with the listener and provide a wonderful foreground to the backdrop of elaborate techniques and unusual experiments.

Don’t think for a second that this is easy listening though. It’s brutal and fierce from the first note to the final riff and rarely slows in momentum.

Both beautifully emotive and technically accurate - what a gift this band have, for there are very few who can do both convincingly, least of all keep a non-proghead interested for the entire duration of their album. Hopefully they will use it well and engage the rest of the music scene to truly appreciate just how epic progressive metal can be.
